Great art enriches our existence, just as a well-prepared meal feeds the senses and satisfies the appetite. This new collection of recipes, accented with images from the internationally acclaimed North Carolina Museum of Art, not only offers a visual feast but is certain to provide nourishment for both body and soul.

An Appetite for Art compiles a wide array of recipes contributed by various members of the North Carolina Museum of Art family — staff, docents, volunteers, members, board members and others — along with selected recipes by Andy and Jennifer Hicks of Blue Ridge, the Museum Restaurant, and others developed by the talented recipe consultants of Taste-Full Publications.

Many of the recipes boast the traditional and contemporary flavors of North Carolina and the South, but the range of cuisines is far-reaching as well, with various appetizers, entrées and desserts drawing on the distinctive tastes of the Mediterranean, Mexico, South America and Asia.

Paintings and sculpture from the North Carolina Museum of Art complement this diversity of dishes — making An Appetite for Art elegant as well as appetizing. In these pages, as in the Museum’s galleries, you will find works by European masters including Lucas Cranach, Jan Brueghel and Claude Monet; paintings by American artists such as Albert Bierstadt, Winslow Homer, or Marsden Hartley. Also featured are several paintings by North Carolina artists, along with Wilmington artist Claude Howell’s wonderfully simple recipe for boiled shrimp.

Savoring the joys of both art and cuisine, An Appetite for Art will be equally at home on the coffee table as in the kitchen.
